Dodgers reliever Michael Kopech underwent surgery to repair a torn meniscus in his right knee, Bill Plunkett of the Orange County Register reported Tuesday. The procedure explains his move to the 60-day injured list and sidelines him until at least late August, but in all reality, he may not be able to return to the team until September, though, based on his rehab and recovery.
“Michael Kopech had surgery to repair a torn meniscus in his right knee, per source. That’s why he was moved to 60-day IL. Still expected back before end of season.”

Just last week, manager Dave Roberts downplayed the injury, calling it minor. “I think we’re all hopeful it will be on the shorter end of it,” he told ESPN’s Alden González. That hope has quickly faded.
Kopech, acquired from the White Sox at the 2024 trade deadline, had emerged as one of the Dodgers’ most effective relievers. He posted a 1.13 ERA in 24 regular-season games for L.A. last year and allowed just three earned runs in 10 playoff appearances. He carried that momentum into 2025, throwing seven shutout innings with a .100 batting average against his 97.7 mph fastball.
The injury is especially untimely for Kopech, who enters free agency this winter. A full, healthy season as a reliever would’ve positioned him well, but his durability remains a concern. Since 2019, Kopech has dealt with Tommy John surgery, hamstring and shoulder injuries, and multiple knee issues.
For the Dodgers, Kopech’s setback adds to a long list of pitching concerns. The bullpen is already missing Evan Phillips, Blake Treinen, Brusdar Graterol, and Michael Grove, and despite Tyler Glasnow’s return, L.A. remains thin. Alexis Díaz was also just optioned after struggling in Triple-A.
If Kopech returns healthy in September, he could be a key piece for the stretch run. But the Dodgers will likely need to bolster the bullpen ahead of the trade deadline—especially with their most reliable arms continuing to drop.
