Los Angeles Rams head coach Sean McVay made it clear in his Monday press conference that 2023’s success down the back half of the year going 7 and 1 and making the playoff has nothing to do with the current iteration of his team.
Sean McVay: Every Year is a New Year
“I think every year is a new year. You’ve got to go earn it.” McVay said, “That team did a great job of being able to stay in the fight, play their best ball after the bye that led to some continuity. I thought we were able to build as that season went on and I thought we played quality football even if we weren’t always getting the results that’s the thing that I want to see I want to see us play quality football on both sides.”
McVay didn’t bring up the injury issues that have fundamentally altered their game plan but put the onus on the players to rise to the challenge, as the 2023 Rams did to earn those wins down the stretch.
“This year’s team has to figure out how to find that in [themselves], to be able to do those things that that [2023] team did. The guys that were a part of it, I think can draw some confidence from it and then bring the other guys that maybe weren’t a part of it with them to see if we give ourselves a chance to reflect on the things that we’re hunting.”
Several players were a part of last year’s Los Angeles Rams team, but they are without many players who helped lead the charge to make the playoffs. Aaron Donald retired and Ernest Jones was traded.
After sneaking out of SoFi Stadium with a win against the San Francisco 49ers, the Rams struggled to execute in the red zone, committed several costly penalties, and failed to stop the rushing attack, against the Chicago Bears, leading to their third loss of the season.
The 1-3 Rams will now host the Green Bay Packers, who are 2-2.
