The fate of the Los Angeles Rams 2024 season hangs in the balance. If a few things go in their favor, they could find themselves as the third or fourth seed in the playoffs. If things break bad Sean McVay will be headed to Cancun by early January.
Bleacher Report is already looking to the future of the Rams team. In a recent article their scouts identified the Rams biggest team need as well as a free agent target to meet one of their needs. Here is what they picked as the positions most needing an upgrade.
Rams Target Shutdown Corner In Free Agency
- Cornerback
- Linebacker
- Safety
- Guard
- Center
Their prescription is to go after current New York Jets cornerback DJ Reed. The 28 year old is heading into the first void year of his most recent contract and with all the movement that is about to take place with the Jets, it is almost a guarenteed they will see a lot of churn on the roster as well.
Here is their reasoning for adding Reed;
“L.A.’s offseason plans will likely hinge on how the rest of the season unfolds. Matthew Stafford is still a top-tier quarterback, but he’ll turn 37 in February and will likely want a new contract if he chooses to continue playing.
Assuming the Rams aren’t eyeing a full-on rebuild in the offseason, they should be eager to land a quality veteran cover corner. New York’s D.J. Reed is one of the top corners headed to market, and at 28 years old, he should have several good years in front of him.
If the Rams believe they can keep their window open for a few more seasons, Reed would be an ideal free-agent target.”
The Rams looked to Tre’Davious White among other options to play opposite Darious Williams, none of which have panned out to the degree the team requires.
Despite being in his seventh season, Reed is playing some of the best football of his career. His 48.7 allowed completion percentage is 10th best among defenders. He has allowed a total of just 87 yards after the catch on 23 receptions and has only allowed four explosive plays.
