NFL Insider Sheds Light On Matthew Stafford’s Future With Los Angeles Rams

The Los Angeles Rams made it clear following the season that they wanted a decision quickly from quarterback Matthew Stafford on his status for the 2025 season. With the two-time Pro Bowl selection announcing his plans to play, the lingering question is if he’ll be the Rams quarterback next season.

Stafford, who turns 37 in February, was unhappy with his contract heading into the 2024 campaign. As a result, Los Angeles moved up guaranteed money on his deal so he would receive more immediately, but that also cast doubt on his future with the team.

Heading into the offseason, Stafford currently holds a $50 million cap hit. If he received a post-June 1 release designation, it would free up $22.99 million in cap space. If Los Angeles found a trade partner for him, it would create $27 million in cap savings. As it currently stands, though, his current cap hit is viewed as untenable for the team which has led to debate about his status for next season.

On Friday’s episode of the Inside Coverage podcast, senior NFL reporter Charles Robinson of Yahoo Sports shared that the Rams organization wants Stafford back as the starting quarterback in 2025.

“I think, from speaking to people in that organization, I think there is every inclination to have Matt Stafford be the quarterback in 2025. I think they feel good about it, I think they feel good about where he is at physically. I think they feel like they can continue to improve the team around him.”

Robinson noted that the pressure is now on the Rams front office, who must figure out how to go about restructuring this deal with Stafford. The issue for Los Angeles is that its veteran quarterback holds leverage in this situation, knowing his cap hit is an issue while also wielding power because of the weak class of quarterback options available in the 2025 NFL Draft and NFL free agency.

A renegotiated deal would create more cap space for the Rams, allowing them to shore up the secondary and make additions to a receiving corps that might no longer have Cooper Kupp in 2025. Barring problems in negotiations, though, Stafford is expected to be the Rams quarterback next season.
