Illness Forces Los Angeles Rams To Replace Top Special Teamer

The Los Angeles Rams have made several efforts to fix their recent struggles in the special teams including using a 2023 7th-round draft pick to pick punter Ethan Evans out of Wingate University. Since then he has provided the team with quality punting with a special ability to get hang time under his punts, giving the defenders plenty of time to get downfield to make a tackle. His 4.34 average hangtime was good for 15th best in the NFL. This year he has improved that to 4.58 seconds — 5th best.

But this week, he cropped up on the Rams injury report — missing practice on Thursday and Friday, when he was officially ruled out for the team’s game against their NFC West division rivals, the Seattle Seahawks. The nature of his illness was not disclosed.

On Thursday the Los Angeles Rams added Ryan Sanborn to the practice squad in a move that special teams coordinator, Chase Blackburn indicated the move was to keep those special teams operations uninterrupted in practice, according to team reporter, Stu Jackson.

The next day they also signed punter Ty Zentner to the practice squad. On Saturday afternoon, they announced that Zentner would take Evans’s spot on the team as punter and as holder for field goals and extra points against the Seahawks

Zentner was initially picked up in 2023 as an undrafted rookie free agent by the Philadelphia Eagles but was released before the season. He spent the first four weeks with the Houston Texans, then the last five weeks with the Tennessee Titans. He attempted 38 punts and managed a net yardage of 40.7 yards with a 4.21-second hangtime

As of Saturday, Sanborn remained on the practice squad.
