How does a team move on from one of the greatest defenders of all time? Better yet, how can a Los Angeles Rams defense that ranked 19th in points allowed in 2023 improve without having Aaron Donald on the field in 2024?
Making matters worse is the fact that the Rams won’t have Raheem Morris controlling the defense this season, leaving first-year defensive coordinator Chris Shula with a tall task ahead. Now the draft is over we have a much better idea of how the Rams roster, and there’s room for improvement, particularly in the secondary.
Yet, the Rams could find some relief from a four-time second-team All-Pro safety, if they can make the numbers work.

Is Justin Simmons a match for the Los Angeles Rams?
According to Sports Illustrated’s Albert Breer, the Rams may be a team to keep an eye on to sign former Denver Broncos safety Justin Simmons.
“The Philadelphia Eagles are one obvious place to look, since Simmons’s old coach, Vic Fangio, is there, as is his old position coach, Christian Parker. I guess you could say the same for Ejiro Evero with the Carolina Panthers, since they have a need there—I just don’t think the Panthers would appeal to Simmons. The Atlanta Falcons and Los Angeles Rams run similar schemes as well, that’d fit Simmons.”

Simmons was released from the Broncos back in March. He has yet to take an official visit, or generate any known public interest since.
Now, it’s possible the 30-year-old has priced himself out of a declining market for safeties, but it’s only a matter of time before Simmons finds a new team to play football for in 2024. Just a year removed from tying for the NFL lead with six interceptions, adding Simmons would inject another playmaker into the Rams’ secondary, allowing Coach Shula to mix and match the pieces to build a better, more versatile defense.
Yet, the Rams may be more concerned with making sure Matthew Stafford’s happy with his contract before shelling out more money to another veteran. Still, if Rams GM Les Snead can find a way to set aside a bit of extra cash, Simmons could be a valuable signing who helps Los Angeles return to the playoffs for the sixth time in eight seasons.
