The world has yet to see Shohei Ohtani take the mound for the Los Angeles Dodgers. The last time he pitched he was in Angels Red and it was in August of 2023. While Ohtani brings plenty of MVP-worthy play as an offensive Goliath, what makes him a truly historic talent is that combined with what he can do with his right arm.
The 30-year-old three-time MVP has been rehabbing since going under the knife twice to address a UCL tear. It has been reported that Ohtani will get back to pitching this season, but the exact timeline for that had not been revealed.
In a unique New Year’s exchange, Dodgers manager Dave Roberts engaged in a lively conversation with Nippon Ham Fighters manager and 2023 World Baseball Classic champion, Kuriyama Hideki. Both men share a unique bond as former managers of Shohei Ohtani, who rose to global acclaim under their respective guidance.

During the conversation, Kuriyama expressed concern regarding Ohtani’s pitching workload. In response, Roberts stated, “I won’t let him pitch until May.” Roberts also provided a glimpse into his plans for Ohtani’s two-way play in 2025, revealing an adjustment to lower the frequency of stolen base attempts.
Ohtani dislocated his shoulder in game two of the 2024 World Series.
Ohtani was recently spotted pitching at Maranatha High School in Pasadena, California.
“This year he is a two-way player, but I don’t plan on letting him pitch until May. (2024 season),” Roberts said further explaining his decision. “He hasn’t pitched for a whole year, so he won’t be able to pitch from March to October (2025). So we have to think about the number of innings he will pitch. He knows that too.”

Kuriyama agreed with the decision to slow-roll Ohtani’s return but expects him to be champing at the bit to get back to work. Roberts expects the same.
“I’ll persuade him with the help of doctors and trainers,” Roberts said laughing. “I need to give him some time off to keep his health and elbow in good condition.”
The Dodgers are expected to kick off their Spring Training schedule on February 22nd and start their season at home against the Chicago Cubs on March 18th. They are slated to play at the Atlanta Braves on May 2nd, that game will be the 32nd game of the Dodgers 2025 season.
