Mets Now Competing For Dodgers Top Free Agent Target

The Los Angeles Dodgers have shored up their roster across all areas except at relief pitcher. One of the biggest names associated with the team is lefty Tanner Scott.

According to The Post’s Mike Puma, the New York Mets are actively pursuing the acquisition of a high-impact left-handed reliever, with Tanner Scott emerging as a potential target. Scott’s recent meeting with the Mets suggests a strong mutual interest.

The relief pitcher market has experienced a slower-than-anticipated development, with several top-tier free agents, including Carlos Estevez (who is attracting interest from the Jays and Reds), Kirby Yates, and Jeff Hoffman (who is also exploring starting opportunities), still available.

This list of available relievers is further augmented by a group of approximately 40 other pitchers, including Kenley Jansen, Andrew Kittredge, Jose Leclerc, and A.J. Minter, who are expected to secure Major League contracts.

Scott’s potential contract, projected to be a four-year, $64 million deal by The Athletic’s Tim Britton, represents a significant commitment for Mets president of baseball operations, David Stearns, who typically favors shorter-term deals for relievers.

Stearns’ history with multi-year reliever contracts is limited, with only one such instance – the signing of Matt Albers in 2019 – occurring during his nine seasons at the helm of front offices.

However, the Mets’ desire to avoid another postseason defeat at the hands of the Dodgers likely motivates this substantial investment. Scott, a dominant force against left-handed hitters, proved his value in the 2024 NLDS, effectively neutralizing Shohei Ohtani.

Securing Scott would not only bolster the Mets’ bullpen but also provide a crucial edge in any potential postseason rematch against their arch-rivals.
