Former Los Angeles Chargers First-Round Pick Named Team’s Best Potential Cap Casualty

The 2025 Los Angeles Chargers’ roster is going to look a bit different than the one that took the field in 2024. Considering general manager Joe Hortiz and head coach Jim Harbaugh are heading into their second year pulling the strings, it makes sense that the Chargers would make changes after learning more about the makeup of their roster.

One of those changes even involved a reunion with wide receiver Mike Williams, the seventh overall pick in the first round of the 2017 NFL Draft. Williams was a cap casualty last offseason as the Chargers looked to cut costs. He then spent a season split between the New York Jets and Pittsburgh Steelers.

Once he hit the open market and could pick his next team, Williams returned to Los Angeles on a one-year, $3 million contract. Yet, there’s a chance Williams never makes it onto the field for a seventh season in Los Angeles.

In fact, recently Bleacher Report’s Kristopher Knox named Williams as the Chargers’ “best player who could still be cut” before the season kicks off.

“The Los Angeles Chargers brought back wide receiver Mike Williams this offseason, though, that doesn’t mean they’ll keep the 30-year-old. While Williams has over 5,100 receiving yards on his resume, head coach Jim Harbaugh was willing to part with him last offseason. Bringing him back did add depth, but L.A. has since drafted Tre Harris, Keandre Lambert-Smith, which could again make Williams expendable.”

Bleacher Report on Mike Williams

Like Knox alluded to, the Chargers have since made more additions to the receiver room, which could make Williams expendable since he’s an aging veteran with no more room for growth.

Williams struggled last season, hauling in just 21 receptions for 298 yards and a touchdown. Surely, the Chargers hope for better production if he makes the squad in 2025.
