Raiders Legend Takes A Page Out Of Tom Brady’s Playbook With Latest Move

Even in retirement, former Raiders cornerback and NFL Hall of Famer Charles Woodson continues to evolve his post-football career—and his next move may be his boldest yet. According to The Athletic’s Dianna Russini, Woodson is nearing a deal to purchase a 0.1% ownership stake in the Cleveland Browns, marking a significant step into the NFL ownership circle.

While the news comes as a surprise—Woodson has no playing ties to Cleveland, having spent his career with the Raiders and Packers—Russini notes that the move is a homecoming of sorts. Woodson is an Ohio native, and his roots reportedly influenced the decision.

The ownership stake, though small, would place Woodson in rare company. He would join Tom Brady, his former University of Michigan teammate, as one of the few former players with a piece of an NFL franchise. Like Brady, who owns a minority share in the Las Vegas Raiders, Woodson would face broadcasting restrictions due to the conflict of interest created by team ownership.

The choice to invest in the Browns rather than the Las Vegas—his former team and current business partner—raises eyebrows. With Las Vegas recently bringing Brady on board, it’s possible the team had no further equity available, or perhaps Woodson saw a unique opportunity in Cleveland.

While a 0.1% stake won’t grant him sweeping influence, Woodson’s legacy, football acumen, and leadership could make him a valuable resource in Cleveland’s front office. Just as Brady has done in Vegas, Woodson is positioning himself for impact beyond the field.
