Former Raiders Pro Bowler Shockingly Retires

It has been an interesting offseason for former Raiders quarterback Derek Carr. After the Saints hired Kellen Moore as their new head coach, there was a newfound excitement for the team, and that Derek Carr could reach a level that he hadn’t seen since his best days with the Raiders.

Unfortunately, he began to experience shoulder pain in March, and it was determined that he would need surgery, which would require a lengthy rehab stint that put the 2025 season in question.

The Saints famously drafted Tyler Shough as a backup plan in this year’s NFL Draft. Well, now the rookie may be thrust into the starting role after Carr made a shocking announcement.

In a statement released by the Saints, Carr says:

“Upon reflection of prayer, and in discussion with Heather, I’ve decided to retire from the National Football League.

For more than 11 years, we have been incredibly blessed, and we are forever grateful and humbled by this experience.

It’s difficult to find the right words to express our thanks to all the teammates, coaches, management, ownership, team officials, and especially the fans who made this journey so special.

Your unwavering support has meant the world to us.”

Carr was diagnosed with a degenerative rotator cuff, an injury that would be tough for any player to come back from, let alone one who is 34 years old.

Carr was drafted by the Raiders in 2014 and played nine seasons for the franchise. He made the Pro Bowl four times and threw for over 4,000 yards four times.

He finished with 35,222 yards and 217 touchdowns in the Silver and Black uniform. He has the most passing yards in Raiders history, by more than 15,000 yards, and has more than 60 touchdowns than Ken Stabler, who is 2nd on the list.
