Rams Head Coach Sean McVay Gets Candid About Adding CB Jaire Alexander

When the Green Bay Packers suddenly released cornerback Jaire Alexander, the Los Angeles Rams were immediately linked to the 2x Pro Bowler.

For months now, there have been rumors of a reunion with current Miami Dolphins corner Jalen Ramsey. The problem is that while the Rams have openly admitted they would love to have Ramsey back, he is still under contract with the Dolphins, and a massive one at that. So not only would they have to give up assets in a trade to get him back, but they would also have to take on his bloated contract.

Alexander is now a free agent. The Rams would give up zero assets and would be able to negotiate their own terms and contract figures.

Alexander is also younger, at 28 years old. This seems like a no-brainer, right?

Not so fast.

When speaking with the media during mini-camp on Tuesday, head coach Sean McVay was asked about the potential of adding Jaire Alexander to the roster.

“Nothing but respect for the player, but I don’t know if that’s the direction we would go,” McVay said.

I will never say never with this team, but it sounds like they are pretty set with the defensive back room as it is currently constructed, while also leaving the door open on a potential Ramsey trade.

Alexander was in the midst of a 4-year, $84 million contract, so perhaps the Rams are taking the stance that he is going to be looking for an even higher average per year than $21 million, and they do not want to get into a bidding war.

Regardless, he would instantly be the team’s best corner, and probably the best corner in the entire division.

The other side of this situation is his health. In the last 4 seasons, he has only played at least 16 games once. The last two seasons, he combined for 14 games total. Paying an astronomical number for a player who has not been on the field much the last few years is a high risk.

However, in just seven games last year, Alexander still finished with 2 interceptions, 1 returned for a touchdown, and 7 passes defended.

Is the injury risk worth the high (and expensive) reward? For now, the Los Angeles Rams do not believe so.
