Los Angeles Rams quarterback Matthew Stafford did not have a bad season in 2024 by any stretch of the imagination, but it was a bit of a down year based on his typical production.

He finished last season with 3,762 yards passing, 20 touchdowns, and 8 interceptions. The previous year, in one fewer game, he finished with 200 more yards and 4 more touchdowns.

Despite this slight drop in production, he was one of the most sought-after players when it was rumored that the Rams might move on from the 37-year-old QB. Both the New York Giants and Las Vegas Raiders were rumored to have offered Stafford nearly $10 million more per year than the Rams are paying him.

Regardless, he remains in Los Angeles and is poised to lead the Rams as one of the top Super Bowl contenders.

Pro Football Focus came out with their preseason quarterback rankings, and they agree with this sentiment.

In their annual quarterback rankings, PFF kept Matthew Stafford in the Top 10, sliding him in at No. 7 overall, just behind Jayden Daniels and just ahead of Justin Herbert.

They listed the Top 10 as follows:

  1. Patrick Mahomes, Kansas City Chiefs
  2. Joe Burrow, Cincinnati Bengals
  3. Lamar Jackson, Baltimore Ravens
  4. Josh Allen, Buffalo Bills
  5. Jalen Hurts, Philadelphia Eagles
  6. Jayden Daniels, Washington Commanders
  7. Matthew Stafford, Los Angeles Rams
  8. Justin Herbert, Los Angeles Chargers
  9. Jared Goff, Detroit Lions
  10. Geno Smith, Los Vegas Raiders

Regarding Stafford and his ranking, John Kosko of PFF says:

“Stafford isn’t coming off his best season – his 74.7 overall grade in 2024 reflects that – but what keeps him in this upper tier is his complete command of the Rams offense. Despite playing behind a shaky offensive line and losing multiple top weapons to injury, he was still a drive away from knocking off the eventual Super Bowl champions in the divisional round. When Stafford is locked in, he is as good as anyone in football.”

Overall, I think these rankings are pretty fair. If I were to make one change, I would drop Jayden Daniels down and move Stafford up to the 6th spot.

No slight against Daniels, who had a fantastic rookie season and is poised to have a great career, but history has shown us that top-flight rookie QBs have slight regressions in year two, just look at CJ Stroud. Stafford has been consistently great, which should count for more.

If the Rams offensive line can stay healthy this year, there is no reason why Stafford can’t push for 4,000 passing yards and potentially his 3rd Pro Bowl nod.

What do you think, Ramily? Where would you rank Matthew Stafford among NFL QBs?
