Los Angeles Rams Pass on Big Splash, Grab Project QB as Stafford’s Heir in New Mock Draft

The Los Angeles Rams are beginning to confront a pivotal question for their future: who succeeds Matthew Stafford? As Stafford enters his 17th NFL season—and nears the end of a restructured contract loaded with 2025 guarantees—the Rams must consider life beyond their Super Bowl-winning quarterback. ESPN’s Matt Miller believes they’ll find their answer in the 2025 NFL Draft.

In Miller’s latest mock, the Rams use the 27th overall pick to select Penn State quarterback Drew Allar. “With Matthew Stafford entering his age-37 season, this would be a good spot for the Rams to pick his eventual successor,” Miller wrote. “Allar is a big-armed quarterback with good mobility for his size (6-foot-5, 238 pounds), but he hasn’t quite put it all together. He has the arm to make any throw and can escape crowded pockets, but goes through cold stretches where his decision-making and accuracy drop off.”

Still, there’s reason for optimism. Allar improved his completion percentage from 59.9% to 66.5% in 2024, suggesting his growth trajectory is still trending upward.

Last season, Allar threw for 3,327 passing yards, 24 passing touchdowns, eight interceptions, and a 77.5 quarterback rating. Penn State reached the College Football Playoff Semifinals before getting dominated by the Fightin’ Irish in the Orange Bowl.

Notably, Allar is the fourth quarterback off the board in Miller’s mock. Cade Klubnik went first overall to the Browns, followed by Garrett Nussmeier (Colts, No. 11) and LaNorris Sellers (Steelers, No. 16). The Rams waited patiently and were rewarded with a high-upside option without needing to trade up.

Thanks to a previous deal with the Falcons, the Rams now control two 2026 first-rounders. Miller sees them using their projected No. 9 pick on Alabama tackle Kadyn Proctor, a potential long-term replacement for Rob Havenstein.

While some fans may hope for a splashier move—like a trade for a star—the Los Angeles Rams’ path here suggests a commitment to building both smartly and steadily toward life after Stafford.
