Los Angeles Rams Chose Discipline Despite Chance To Draft Huge Position Of Need

Heading into the 2025 NFL Draft, the Los Angeles Rams already had their starting quarterback in place after restructuring Matthew Stafford’s deal earlier this offseason. While Stafford remains locked in as the present solution, the franchise continues to keep its long-term plans at quarterback close to the vest.

Not only did the Rams opt not to draft a quarterback this year, but they also didn’t sign one in the undrafted free agent market — a clear signal that they’re in no rush to find Stafford’s successor.

Despite being linked to several prospects throughout the pre-draft process — including Alabama’s Jalen Milroe, Ole Miss’ Jaxson Dart, and others — the Rams were never considered a serious contender to select a QB. As ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler reported this week, “The Rams liked a handful of quarterbacks, including Tyler Shough and Kyle McCord, but were never a major threat to take one this year.”

That approach aligns with the team’s consistent draft strategy under Sean McVay. Since taking over as head coach in 2017, they have yet to select a quarterback in the first round. But that could change in 2026.

According to Fowler, league insiders believe Los Angeles is eyeing the 2026 Rams draft class, which is expected to feature a deeper pool of quarterback talent. And now, after trading down from the 26th overall pick in this year’s draft, the Rams draft are armed with two first-round selections in 2026 — their own, plus one acquired from Atlanta.

Holding the Falcons’ first-rounder offers a key advantage. If Atlanta struggles this upcoming season, they could end up with a top-10 pick, giving them the flexibility to either draft a top quarterback or package both picks to move even higher.

Stafford’s status remains a year-to-year proposition, but LA is clearly positioning itself for a big swing next year — possibly one that could define the next era of the franchise.
