Los Angeles Rams Linked In New All-Pro Cornerback Trade Rumors

The Los Angeles Rams are among the teams reportedly showing interest in Green Bay Packers cornerback Jaire Alexander, who may be traded or released by Green Bay. This potential move arises as the Rams seek to bolster their cornerback depth.

Several sources have indicated the Rams’ potential interest in Alexander. NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reported that Alexander, “has been one of the best defensive backs in the NFL when he’s healthy,” and that the Packers and Alexander may part ways. Sports Illustrated’s Albert Breer also listed the Rams as a team that “entered the draft with needs at the position, and didn’t take corners in the first two rounds of the draft.”

The Rams face uncertainty at cornerback. They need cornerback help with so much uncertainty at the position. Ahkello Witherspoon is an impending free agent, and the trio of Darious Williams, Cobie Durant, and Emmanuel Forbes Jr. aren’t necessarily long-term solutions.”While the 2025 draft presents an option, Alexander is a ‘known quantity.’

A trade for Alexander presents both potential benefits and drawbacks for the Rams.

Pros:

  • Shutdown Cornerback: Alexander is considered an elite cornerback when healthy. Alexander is one of the best cornerbacks in the NFL when healthy. He has 13 interceptions and 70 defended passes since 2018 with a 57.8% career completion rate allowed when targeted. Acquiring him would give the Rams a true No. 1 cornerback, a role they haven’t had filled since trading Jalen Ramsey.
  • Improve Secondary: The Rams’ passing defense has struggled in recent years. The Rams have ranked 20th or worse in passing yards allowed since 2021 and 14th or worse in passing touchdowns allowed since 2022. Adding Alexander could transform the secondary.
  • Weaken a Competitor: Trading for Alexander would also take him away from another NFC contender, potentially benefiting the Rams.

Cons:

  • Injury Concerns: Alexander’s recent injury history is a significant concern. “Durability is a huge concern for Alexander in recent years. He’s only played one full season since 2021 and missed 10 games in each of the past two seasons because of knee, back, and shoulder injuries.”
  • Contract Cost: Alexander’s contract is expensive. “Alexander will be very expensive over the next two seasons. He has base salaries of $16.15 million and $18.15 million in 2025 and 2026, respectively, with cap hits that exceed $25 million in both years.” The Rams would likely need to restructure his contract.
  • Trade Price: Acquiring Alexander would require significant draft capital.
