Los Angeles Chargers Star Player Still Absent From OTAs, Holdout Looming?

We are into the month of June now, and OTAs for the Los Angeles Chargers continue to roll on. While OTAs are technically optional, it is kind of an unwritten rule that everyone should show up, and when a player does not, it can raise some eyebrows.

There should not be any level of real concern, but for the 2nd straight week, star tackle Rashawn Slater has not been in attendance.

As The Athletic’s Daniel Popper reported, Slater remains absent from OTAs, and Trey Pipkins has been filling in at left tackle.

Slater is in the last year of his contract and is seeking an extension. Discussions have been ongoing, but no real movement has been made yet. When a deal does get done, Slater will likely become one of the highest-paid offensive tackles in the NFL.

Last season, Slater finished with the second-highest blocking grade, per PFF, with a total grade of 90.9. He had a run blocking grade of 82.3 and a pass blocking grade of 89.9. Protecting Justin Herbert’s blindside is of the utmost importance, and Slater is one of the best in the NFL at doing it.

Penai Sewell, who was drafted just a few picks before Slater in the same draft class, just signed a massive 4-year extension worth $112 million, with $85 million guaranteed. His average annual salary is $28 million.

Slater will be looking for a contract similar to this. The question is whether or not the Chargers will make it happen, but all indications are that they will.
