Los Angeles Chargers Rookie Is Guaranteed Starter, According To NFL Analyst

Los Angeles Chargers first-round pick Omarion Hampton has landed in a dream scenario, according to NFL.com’s Marc Ross. The former UNC standout was named to Ross’s list of “2025 NFL Draft: Ten rookies in the best situations to succeed in Year 1 and beyond,” with strong endorsements for his fit under new head coach Jim Harbaugh.

Hampton could not have landed in a better spot,” Ross wrote. “Jim Harbaugh is known for wanting to pound the rock.” That reputation is already backed by results: the Chargers leapt from 24th in rushing attempts and 25th in rushing yards in 2023 to 11th and 17th, respectively, in Harbaugh’s first year at the helm.

Hampton joins a backfield that includes former Steelers running back Najee Harris, but Ross believes the rookie will rise to the top sooner than later. “Even with Najee Harris joining the Bolts’ backfield this offseason, the rookie should see plenty of opportunities,” Ross wrote. “In fact, I believe Hampton will emerge as the starter at some point during the 2025 season due to his versatility and explosiveness.

Though Harris brings durability and production — four straight 1,000-yard seasons — his career 3.9 yards per carry average underscores a lack of big-play burst. Hampton, by contrast, was one of college football’s most explosive runners in 2024 and brings a home-run threat Harbaugh has historically maximized.

He’ll wear defenses down,” Ross said of Harris, “but Hampton should be the featured back in Harbaugh’s offense this year and beyond.

With Harbaugh’s power-run philosophy and a clear runway to touches, Hampton has a real chance to be one of the most productive rookies in the 2025 class.
