Los Angeles Chargers Deemed Best Fit For Defensive All-Pro Trade Candidate

The Los Angeles Chargers may still have a lingering hole in their secondary following the 2025 NFL Draft. Despite addressing several positions this offseason, cornerback remains a potential area of concern, especially after the team opted not to select one in April.

While the Chargers have signed veterans Donte Jackson (two years) and Benjamin St-Juste (one year), there’s growing speculation that Los Angeles could look to the trade market or free agency for additional help. One name that has surfaced is Green Bay Packers cornerback Jaire Alexander, as noted by ESPN.

Alexander, a two-time Pro Bowler, may end up on the trade block this offseason. He has appeared in just 14 games over the last two seasons and only 34 games total since 2021, raising concerns about his durability. However, his upside when healthy is undeniable.

“If Alexander is available in a trade, he would be seen as an upgrade in Jesse Minter’s defensive system,” ESPN wrote. “The Chargers are zone heavy, playing both single-high Cover 3 and split-safety schemes. Alexander has the play instincts and foot quickness to match routes, and his transition speed allows him to make plays on the ball.”

Alexander has logged 12 interceptions and 57 pass breakups over his career. At his best, he’s a true No. 1 corner with elite anticipation and change-of-direction ability — traits that would mesh well with Minter’s scheme.

Still, the injury history cannot be ignored, and the financial commitment is significant: Alexander has two years remaining on a deal that includes considerable guaranteed money. That complicates any potential trade, especially for a Chargers team that may prefer to invest in longer-term roster flexibility or re-sign familiar veterans from last season.

In fact, the more realistic option for Los Angeles may not be trading for Alexander at all. If the Packers were to cut ties with him in the coming months — a possibility given his contract and availability concerns — the Chargers could pursue him without surrendering draft capital.

Such a move would present far less risk and more upside, allowing Los Angeles to add a high-end talent without jeopardizing their future. Until then, re-signing some of their own depth players might be the more sensible path.

There’s no question Alexander is an impact defender when on the field — but that’s the rub. As the Chargers weigh their options, availability may prove just as valuable as ability.
