Los Angeles Lakers Insider Shares Troubling Update On LeBron James Future With The Team

As LeBron James approaches his 23rd NBA season, uncertainty once again clouds his future. Though most expect him to remain with the Los Angeles Lakers, the path to that outcome is anything but straightforward.

James, 40, holds a $52.6 million player option for the 2025-26 season. He hasn’t publicly committed to returning, and according to The Athletic‘s Jovan Buha, tensions have simmered beneath the surface for years. “The relationship has been a little frosty at times,” Buha said on Buha’s Block. “It hasn’t always been the warmest over the past couple of years.”

Despite the chill, both sides have largely kept matters professional—no “bad vibes” akin to those reported out of Denver. The Lakers’ deadline acquisition of Luka Doncic re-energized the franchise, and LeBron’s 2024-25 production (24.4 PPG, 8.2 APG, 7.8 RPG on 51.3% shooting) proves he can still elevate a contender.

Still, L.A.’s first-round playoff exit was a sobering reminder that Doncic and James aren’t enough on their own. If the Lakers fail to upgrade the roster—particularly at center—James could be tempted to opt out and chase a ring elsewhere, possibly at a discount.

LeBron’s Future Still Tied to the Los Angeles Lakers—For Now

Buha still believes James returns: “The only question is whether he’s opting in or opting out and re-signing.” But the tean must navigate the power dynamics delicately. LeBron, even at 40, holds rare control—bolstered by his ambition to maximize what could be his final title window.

For now, all signs point to a reunion. Yet until James inks a deal, the Lakers’ offseason—roster moves, salary cap plans, and long-term vision—remains on hold. In Los Angeles, LeBron James is still the center of gravity.
