Massive LeBron James Update Ahead Of Lakers June Deadline

After a regular season that exceeded expectations, the Los Angeles Lakers‘ season ended abruptly in the first round of the NBA Playoffs at the hands of the Minnesota Timberwolves. With the season over, there are plenty of questions looming that need answers, but the first and most important involves superstar LeBron James.

James has an opt-out clause that, if exercised, would make him a free agent and allow him to sign with any team that he wishes.

There was some speculation that he would exercise this and test free agency, but could still re-sign with the Lakers on a new deal.

ESPN NBA Insider Shams Charania was on the Pat McAfee Show, and he spoke on the matter.

LeBron James Likely To Opt-In, Stay With Los Angeles Lakers

According to Charania, LeBron James is likely to opt in and remain with the Lakers.

“I’m told he’s likely to opt in,” Charania said. “He’s got a player option of $54-57 million. He’s got a massive player option. That’s likely, that’s the plan. His option date is June 29, so he still has about a month to figure it out.

James is currently about to enter the second year of a two-year deal that was worth $101,355,998. His cap hit for the 2025-26 season is roughly $52.5 million, according to Spotrac.

“There’s gonna be some hard conversations that are gonna happen between him and the Lakers,” Charania continued. “Seeing what this team looks like. Because LeBron James, whether he plays one more season or a few more seasons, he wants to be in a competitive environment.”

James is entering his 23rd NBA season and is still playing at an elite level. He finished last year, averaging 24.4 points per game, 7.8 rebounds, and 8.2 assists.

If James does indeed opt in, the next big question that the Lakers will have to answer involves the center position. It is an absolute must for them to add a talented player there, whether it be through free agency or through another trade.

Whether James will be involved in those talks remains to be seen.
