Lakers Get Positive Luka Dončić Injury Update Ahead of NBA Cup

The Los Angeles Lakers may be getting their superstar back sooner than expected. Luka Dončić, who’s missed the last three games with a left leg contusion and finger sprain, has been upgraded to questionable for Friday’s NBA Cup opener against the Memphis Grizzlies, according to Dan Woike of the Los Angeles Times.

Dončić’s status marks a significant boost for a Lakers team that’s stayed afloat despite being shorthanded. Without both Dončić and LeBron James, Los Angeles has managed a 2–1 record, notching wins over the Kings and Timberwolves.

Gotta have the Latest from LA + LUKA Mind-meld

Before the setback, Dončić was off to one of the best starts of his career. In his first two games as a Laker, he scored 43 and 49 points, averaging an astonishing 46.0 points, 11.5 rebounds, and 8.5 assists on 62 percent shooting. His performance against Minnesota was particularly gritty — despite injuring his finger early in the first quarter, he stayed in the game and finished with 49.

“Luka looked in the best shape of his life,” head coach JJ Redick said earlier this month. “He’s playing with confidence and control — you can tell he’s chasing something bigger this year.”

Lakers Staying Competitive Without Their Stars

While Dončić’s quick recovery is welcome news, the Lakers remain without several key players. James continues to rehab from sciatica and is expected to miss at least two more weeks. Gabe Vincent (ankle), Maxi Kleber, and rookie Adou Thiero are also sidelined.

Meanwhile, veteran guard Marcus Smart — who’s missed the past two games with a quad injury — has also been upgraded to questionable. His return, along with Dončić’s, could provide a major lift to a depleted rotation that’s leaned heavily on Austin Reaves and Nick Smith Jr.

A Timely Boost Before the NBA Cup

The Lakers’ ability to stay competitive despite their injuries has impressed league observers. “They’ve shown they can win shorthanded,” one Western Conference scout told HoopsHype. “If Luka comes back healthy, they’ll be terrifying.”

The Lakers open NBA Cup play Friday night in Memphis at 6:30 p.m. PT — and all eyes will be on whether No. 77 is back in uniform.
