How Many Strikeouts Does Dodgers Pitcher Clayton Kershaw Need To Reach 3,000?

Los Angeles Dodgers pitcher Clayton Kershaw will go down as one of the greatest pitchers in Major League Baseball history when he decides to hang it up. One milestone left for him to cross off is to throw for over 3,000 strikeouts.

Only 19 pitchers have thrown over 3,000 strikeouts, and Kershaw should cross that mark this season, most likely even this month.

Currently, Kershaw is sitting 20th in MLB history with 2,983 strikeouts to date. He is set to take the mound tonight (6/14) against the San Francisco Giants.

Dodgers Pitcher Clayton Kershaw Is 17 Strikeouts Away From 3,000 – (5Ks During Current Game Against Giants)

In his last pitching outing against the St. Louis Cardinals on June 8th, Kershaw tossed 7 strikeouts. If he were able to stay on that trend, it would take him 3 more games to reach 3K.

His 3rd start will most likely come at the end of the month or the very beginning of July, just before the 4th. They finish the month away at Colorado and then at Kansas City. The team comes back home on the 1st of July and then welcomes the Chicago White Sox at Dodger Stadium.

It would be so special if Kershaw threw that historic strikeout in front of the home crowd.

Here are the pitchers currently ahead of him.

  • Clayton Kershaw – 2,983 (20)
  • John Smoltz – 3,084 (19)
  • CC Sabathia – 3,093 (18)
  • Curt Schilling – 3,116 (17)
  • Bob Gibson – 3,117 (16)

Kershaw is not the same strikeout pitcher that he once was, thanks to some recent injuries. But it was not that long ago (2023) when he threw 137 strikeouts in a season. If he stays healthy, there is an absolute chance that he finishes Top 15 before he decides to retire.

We will update this tracker as he nears the historic achievement.
