Los Angeles Dodgers Veteran Steals the Spotlight While Lineup Struggles

Los Angeles Dodgers lineup has taken a hit so far this season. Both Max Muncy and Michael Conforto are thoroughly in slumps, batting under .200 this year and Teoscar Hernandez and Tommy Edman are on the injured list.

Meanwhile, first baseman Freddie Freeman was named National League Player of the Week after a blistering stretch on the plate between May 5 and 11. Over that span, the reigning World Series MVP slashed .500 with three home runs, seven runs scored, 12 RBI, and a jaw-dropping 1.500 OPS. It’s the 10th time Freeman has earned the honor in his career and his first in 2025.

Now hitting a National League-best .376, Freeman also leads the league in slugging percentage (.734), OPS (1.170), and OPS+ (228)—though he still falls just short of the at-bat minimum to officially qualify.

Dodgers manager Dave Roberts praised Freeman’s toughness and consistency despite his recent injuries.
“I just think he’s relentless,” Roberts told MLB.com’s Sonja Chen. “Obviously, he’s swinging a hot bat… And he’s been ailing. Even when the trip started, we were talking about giving him a day off. But he persevered, and we needed every bit of it.”

Freeman, who missed 10 games in April after slipping in the shower and aggravating an old ankle injury, has been red-hot since returning to the lineup on April 14. He’s logged hits in 15 of his last 16 games and is batting .392 in that stretch.

“I feel the best I’ve felt since I got hurt,” Freeman said when he was activated. “Better than before the Tigers series, so this was huge. … Hate to say it, but I might’ve needed the 10 days.”

Freeman didn’t ramp up for the season until January as he recovered from a rib injury that lingered from 2024 and ultimately forced him to sit out the Tokyo Series. But now, the 34-year-old appears to be fully healthy and back in elite form—positioning himself for what could be his seventh consecutive All-Star nod.

Freeman remains under contract through the 2027 season, earning $27 million annually. If his current form holds, he could be headed for yet another MVP-level campaign.
