The Los Angeles Dodgers will be without one of their top bullpen arms longer than initially anticipated. Right-hander Evan Phillips, who was placed on the injured list last week with what was first described as minor right forearm discomfort, is now expected to be sidelined for “a couple weeks” without throwing, according to manager Dave Roberts.
An MRI revealed inflammation in Phillips’ elbow, but no structural damage—a relief, though the situation has grown more serious than the team originally believed.
“Yeah I think it is, just to be frank,” Roberts admitted when asked if the injury was worse than expected. “You’re going from potentially pitching that night to saying I just can’t get loose to going on the IL. But … am I concerned about it? No.”
Los Angeles Dodgers Push Back Evan Phillips’ Recovery Timeline

Phillips was initially projected to return as soon as he was eligible, but that timeline has now been pushed back. Roberts emphasized the club’s long-term priorities in managing the reliever’s recovery.
“It’s inflammation in his elbow so it’s just going to take some time,” Roberts said. “We’re going to take some time with Evan because as we said from the outset he’s so valuable going forward we have to be mindful and cautious with the buildup.”
The Dodgers are taking no chances with Phillips, a key part of their bullpen especially as the season progresses into the stretch run and, ideally, into October. Last season, Phillips posted a 3.62 ERA with 63 strikeouts and 17 walks across 54.2 innings, establishing himself as one of the team’s most dependable relievers.
Prior to his injury this season, Phillips had yet to allow a run through 5.2 innings, striking out six and walking two.
The news comes as the Dodgers continue to navigate a competitive National League West. Roberts recently acknowledged that unlike previous seasons, he doesn’t expect Los Angeles to run away with the division crown. That makes Phillips’ absence—and eventual return—all the more significant.
