As the 2025 MLB season unfolds, it’s becoming increasingly clear that Bo Bichette’s tenure with the Toronto Blue Jays may be nearing its end. Despite his status as a two-time All-Star and one of the franchise’s foundational players, there have been no reports of extension talks between Bichette and the Blue Jays—a silence that speaks volumes.
According to former MLB general manager Jim Bowden, both the Los Angeles Dodgers and New York Yankees are likely to pursue Bichette should he hit free agency. Given his skill set, age, and positional flexibility, it’s no surprise he’s drawing early interest.
A Quiet Breakup Brewing in Toronto
Toronto seems to be turning the page. The franchise’s recent mega-deal with Vladimir Guerrero Jr.—a reported $500 million contract—could make retaining Bichette financially untenable. With free agency looming at the end of the season and Toronto slipping out of contention, the team could even explore trading Bichette at the deadline to avoid losing him for nothing.
While Bichette has played his entire career at shortstop, Bowden suggests that a position change could be necessary if he hopes to join a contender. “Bichette might have to be willing to move to third base for certain interested teams like the Tigers, Yankees or Dodgers,” Bowden wrote in The Athletic.
Bichette’s Value: Still Strong, But Uncertain

After a subpar 2024 season marred by injuries, Bichette has rebounded nicely in 2025. He’s currently slashing .286 with four home runs and a 119 OPS+, which is in line with his career average. Still, questions remain. From 2021 to 2023, he was among the league’s most consistent offensive performers, posting OPS+ marks between 121 and 128, hitting 20+ home runs annually, and leading the AL in hits twice.
To land the type of deal he’s likely seeking—something in the range of Alex Bregman’s six-year, $171 million offer from Detroit—Bichette will need to return to that elite form in the second half of this season.
A Perfect Fit in Los Angeles?
Among the potential suitors, the Los Angeles Dodgers stand out. The team is never shy about spending and always looking for ways to upgrade offensively. While Mookie Betts has capably filled in at shortstop, the long-term plan likely involves moving him back to the outfield, especially with Andy Pages and Michael Conforto struggling to deliver at the plate.
Enter Bichette. At just 27 years old, he brings veteran production and postseason upside—two things the Dodgers covet. If they prefer not to shuffle Betts again, Bichette could slide over to third base, possibly replacing Max Muncy, whose future in L.A. is far from secure.
“Bichette hasn’t shown that he can hit for power in recent years, and his value has decreased,” Bowden notes, “but there’s undoubtedly something left in the tank.” That statement rings true—especially when you consider that Bichette is still capable of hitting close to .300 and maintaining an elite contact rate in an era that increasingly lacks it.

The New York Yankees Factor
The New York Yankees are also a logical destination. With uncertainty surrounding their long-term infield configuration and a clear need for more consistency at the plate, Bichette’s bat could be a welcomed addition. Like the Dodgers, the Yankees would likely require him to shift positions, but the draw of playing in pinstripes—and competing deep into October—might be enough to entice him.
Trade Deadline or Free Agency?

If Toronto falls further out of the playoff picture, a midseason trade becomes more plausible. It would be a strategic move to maximize Bichette’s value before he walks. The Dodgers and Yankees—both loaded with prospects and positioned to contend—could put compelling offers on the table.
But even if Bichette remains in Toronto through the season, free agency promises to be active. He’ll be part of a star-studded class that includes Kyle Tucker, and potentially Alex Bregman and Pete Alonso.
Bottom Line
Bo Bichette’s future is no longer tied to the Blue Jays. While his 2025 performance will dictate his market value, the interest from elite franchises is already forming. Whether it’s via trade or free agency, don’t be surprised if Bichette ends up in Dodger blue or Yankee pinstripes—anchoring the infield and reigniting the spark that once made him one of the game’s most exciting young stars.
