Los Angeles Rams Training Camp: Great Day For Tutu Atwell, Is 2024 Finally HIS Year?

The Los Angeles Rams seemingly drafted Tutu Atwell based on one trait; his speed. Of course, you need a lot more than that to be a good wide receiver. Those things have never come together in his first three seasons.

Now he heads into the final year of his rookie contract, meaning he will have to find a role for himself finally in order to get a second contract.

Last year started with Atwell in the rotation among the three receivers in Sean McVay’s prominent 11-personnel offense. But it ended with him being replaced by Demarcus Robinson, playing just 17 snaps over the final four weeks of the season.

The frustrating aspect of Tutu Atwell’s game is that he flashes greatness. For instance, Saturday at Rams training camp he showed how good he could be. He was targeted several times due to not just his speed, but also his precise route running. His catches also displayed his body control and hands.

In a day of several great catches, the one that stood out the most was on a deep out route, with Tre’Davious White playing physical coverage, Atwell was able to not just make the catch but hold on to the ball while White was draped all over him.

Atwell also caught a touchdown pass from Jimmy Garoppolo in the two-minute drill section of Rams training camp.

But… He also dropped several passes in non-contract pitch and catch drills.

A possible role for Atwell is within the kick return, because of the new rules around that particular play. He believes he can be a significant contributor in that aspect.

“I found out about the new rule. Normally, you got guys coming down full speed but they got to wait till I catch the ball. It’s going to be dangerous.”
