Former Los Angeles Rams running back Todd Gurley was a special talent. After being drafted 10th overall by the Rams in 2015, Gurley burst onto the scene with over 1,100 yards rushing his rookie season in just 12 starts. He was elected to the Pro Bowl as a rookie, and his future looked extremely bright.
In his 2nd season (first in Los Angeles) he struggled (as did the entire team, specifically the offense) and finished the year with under 1,000 yards. There was certainly still excitement, but some of the shine had quickly worn.
Well, that shine came back in a big way in Sean McVay’s first season as head coach. He finished the year with 2,093 all-purpose yards, and 19 total touchdowns. He finished 2nd in MVP voting to Tom Brady and was named the Offensive Player of the Year.

It seemed as if Todd Gurley was en route to becoming the greatest Rams running back ever, which is an extremely esteemed list.
But just 2 seasons later, largely due to lingering knee issues, Gurley was released from the Rams and signed with the Atlanta Falcons. He played one season with the Falcons but has not played in the NFL since the 2020 season.

Where Does Los Angeles Rams RB Todd Gurley Stack Up?
Todd Gurley has not played a football game since 2020 and yet, still ranks 7th in total touchdowns scored since 2015. In fact, only three running backs are above him, Christian McCaffrey, Ezekiel Elliott, and Derrick Henry. For those who have forgotten, Todd Gurley was extremely good at football.
What could have been? In terms of the greatest Rams Running Backs of all time, Todd Gurley currently sits 5th in terms of yards with 5,404 yards (Steven Jackson is first with 10,138 yards). But in terms of rushing touchdowns, Gurley is tied for first with Marshall Faulk with 58. Gurley did this in four seasons. You have to think if he could have even played just 2-3 more he could have finished his career as the greatest Rams Running Back ever.
For even more context, during Hall-of-Famer LaDainian Tomlinson’s historic 4-year run, he finished with 87 total touchdowns, including his record-setting 31 total touchdowns in 2006.
Todd Gurley’s 79 is not that far off.
What could have been? Well, what was, was certainly special.
