Over the weekend the Los Angeles Rams interviewed long-time NFL head coach Ron Rivera to replace Raheem Morris as the team’s defensive coordinator. Morris was hired by the Atlanta Falcons last week to be the team’s new head coach. The Philadelphia Eagles is also interested in Rivera.
Los Angeles Rams Interview Ron Rivera
Jonathan Jones of CBS Sports first reported that the team interviewed Rivera. Rivera was fired by the Washington Commanders earlier this month after going 26-40-1 over four seasons. Rivera served as a steadying force through the Commander’s troubled last few seasons.
Sean McVay has generally looked outside of the organization for his top coordinator positions. Rivera fits the mold of his first DC hire, Wade Phillips.
Rivera did take over as the Commander’s defensive coordinator after firing Jack Del Rio in Week 12. Rivera did say that he enjoyed returning to those duties.
Rivera was also the head coach of the Carolina Panthers from 2011-2019, leading the team to the Super Bowl in 2015.
Rivera was last a defensive coordinator from 2008-2010 for the then-San Diego Chargers and for the Chicago Bears from 2004-2006. At all stops, Rivera has turned the defenses into top units.
Rivera is a native Californian, hailing from Fort Ord in the Monterey Bay area, and attended UC Berkeley before being drafted by the Chicago Bears.
