When ESPN insider Shams Charania first posted that the Los Angeles Lakers traded Anthony Davis and Co. for Luka Doncic, most thought Charania’s account had been hacked. This trade is historic, not for traditional reasons, but because of how laughably lopsided it was.
Los Angeles Lakers Talked Dallas Mavericks Down From Kings Ransom For Luka Doncic

Or ended up being. According to Kirk Goldsberry via The Bill Simmons Podcast, the trade originally started off in a much different place.
“One of my sources inside the Lakers indicating that the deal was bigger.” Goldsberry started.
“There were two first [round draft picks] and there was Dalton [Knecht] connect and the deal got whittled down because, I think, Rob Pelinka was able to convince Dallas that Luka is a lot of [more of a] risk. Look at this way because this guy is…..He is drinking or whatever. His weight problem, whatever. They were able to convince them. This was a weeks-long process. That’s another thing that came out today. Dallas had three and a half weeks. Dallas started it, dude. This fell in Rob Pelinka’s lap and then he was able to reduce the outward Lakers assets.”
Barring a fundamental ignorance of NBA talent, this goes to show just how desperate the Mavericks were to unload Doncic — which if the reasons Dallas is reportedly worried about are true could backfire for the Lakers once LeBron James, inevitably departs.
Goldsberry referenced the trade for Mikal Bridges, which required five first-round picks from the Brooklyn Nets to jar him loose from the Phoenix Suns.
