The Los Angeles Chargers‘ new regime did not prioritize wide receivers in the first year of their rebuild under their new regime, headed by Jim Harbaugh. They moved on from Keenan Allen and Mike Williams and signed several journeyman veteran pass catchers throughout the season. Their biggest addition to the corps was a second-round draft pick, Ladd McConkey.
McConkey has been a rousing success of a rookie, but the inconsistency and injury among the rest show a real opportunity to add firepower to the offense.
Will the Chargers Finally Prioritize WR This Offseason?
Tyler Brooke of The 33rd Team has speculated that the Los Angeles Chargers could be a potential trade destination for Miami Dolphins wide receiver Tyreek Hill to meet this need.
“The Chargers still lack a reliable deep threat. Quentin Johnston has looked much better in his second NFL season, but he still has drop issues and fits more effectively as a traditional big-bodied “X” receiver. There’s still time for him to cut down the drops, and his development suggests he can still be a starting-caliber player.”
“Adding Hill to a receiver room with {Quentin} Johnston and McConkey would give Herbert weapons with all kinds of different skill sets, opening up the passing game even more. Herbert has a rocket arm and is capable of hitting receivers in stride on deep balls, so giving him a speedster like Hill could put him in position for a breakout year in 2025,” Brooke wrote. “Plus, the Chargers have plenty of financial flexibility and draft capital to get a deal done.”
Brooke posited that the deal could get done if the Chargers offered up their 2025 second-round pick to the Miami Dolphins.
Hill has been a highly productive member of the Dolphins’ offense this season, recording 67 receptions for 805 yards and five touchdowns in 14 games, despite big injuries to the rest of the offense. His previous seasons with the Chiefs saw him achieve even greater heights, including a 1,799-yard, 13-touchdown campaign in 2023 and a 1,710-yard, seven-touchdown season in 2022.
A move to the Chargers could reignite Hill’s offensive production. With Justin Herbert at quarterback, Hill would have the opportunity to capitalize on his elite speed and playmaking ability, potentially returning to his Pro Bowl form.
