The NFL fined New Orleans Saints defensive lineman Nathan Shepherd $11,817 for a dirty play against Los Angeles Chargers quarterback Justin Herbert. During last Sunday’s game, Shepherd grabbed Herbert’s leg and twisted it while on the ground, a move commonly referred to as a gator roll that could have resulted in a serious injury.

Many analysts, including Mike Florio, believe the punishment was too lenient, arguing that a suspension would have been a more appropriate penalty. The NFL has faced criticism for its inconsistent disciplinary actions, particularly when it comes to player safety.
While Shepherd’s actions were clearly reckless and dangerous, the league’s decision to issue a relatively small fine has raised questions about its commitment to player safety.
Bradley Bozeman, the Chargers center who was also penalized for unnecessary roughness after intervening to protect Herbert, but the NFL did not issue a fine to Bozeman.
Saints coach Dennis Allen defended the hit;
“I think it’s not accurate. Here’s a guy that’s trying to wrap the quarterback up.” Allen said. “He’s on the ground, he has no idea whether the quarterback has the ball or not. He’s just trying to bring the quarterback down to the ground, so there was nothing malicious about that play. It’s a guy that’s trying to make the play. I went back and looked at that play again after seeing the comments and I don’t agree with that.”
