The Los Angeles Chargers secondary has been a revolving door due to injuries to nearly every member not named Derwin James. Even recent reinforcements, Marcus Maye and Eli Apple have been bitten, landing on the injured reserve over the last few weeks.
Of course, injuries don’t help any team compete, but for the Chargers, injuries to safeties have the knock-on effect of limiting James, who is at his best when he is able to be moved around to various advantageous spots on the field — whether that is as a pass rusher or in slot coverage.
Jamal Adams Named A Good Fit For Chargers
In a recent article, Last Word on Sports concluded that LA would be a good landing spot for recently cut safety Jamal Adams. Adams was most recently a member of the Detroit Lions, whose defense has been ravaged by injuries. The veteran in his eighth season in the league played a limited rep share in just five games this season.
“The Chargers are in a good place playing for a deep playoff run under head coach Jim Harbaugh. There were struggles the first couple of weeks in the regular season but the secondary has been explosive. However, given that the depth chart is weak the safety unit behind Derwin James and Tony Jefferson, they should look for some immediate help. With Alohi Gilman, Elijah Molden, and Marcus Maye on IR, they will likely benefit from a veteran like Adams to play in a situational role.”
Early in his career, Adams was elected to three Pro Bowls and was named to the Associated Press All-Pro first team once and second team twice.
Whether or not they decide to sign him, the Chargers will be getting some help at the position as Gilman has returned to practice this week.
