Did Easton Stick Do Enough To Quiet His Critics?

The world was not impressed by, Los Angeles Chargers‘ backup quarterback, Easton Stick’s performance in the first two weeks of the 2024 preseason. The criticism wasn’t without merit. His combined completion percentage (50) was 71st among preseason quarterbacks, despite the offense giving him high-percentage throws. His average depth of target was just 4.9 yards, ranked 75th. He had thrown no touchdowns and two interceptions.

But yet again the Chargers trotted Stick out there. For the first time this year, they kept him out there for all four quarters of the game. And they did not shy away from asking him to do a lot in the game. He attempted 29 passes, compared to just 18 rushing attempts.

The positive takeaways were evident. The Charger won the game and Stick had something to do with it. He threw his first touchdown of the year. As for that short ADOT, the touchdown was on a deep 45-yard pass down the sideline to Simi Fehoko that he took to the endzone from the Dallas 40-yard line. In general, in this game, Stick was taking deeper shots down the field more often.

But he still lacked the touch on the ball needed to complete those passes. He went 12 for 29 passing for 187 yards. He had shown a significant improvement from the first game to the second in completion percentage, going from 35 to 65 percent. Here he falls back to earth with a completion percentage of just 41.

The Chargers also didn’t shy away from sticking Stick in front of the media after the game. At the podium, the soon-to-be 29-year-old quarterback seemed cool and confident. When asked about his plans for the next few days he eluded to starting preparations for the Chargers Week 1 game against the Las Vegas Raiders;

“Tomorrow’s off. I will enjoy it, get healthy and then go from there. We got a big game Week 1, so we’ll see what happens.”
