Chargers Worst Case Scenario Averted: Cornerstone Player Back in Practice

The Los Angeles Chargers head into their bye week coming off their second straight loss in which they were missing both starting offensive tackles. To many, this was a nightmare scenario. Not only was one of those players, Joe Alt, their 2024 first-round pick, but under Jim Harbaugh, the team was going to be built around the offensive line.

Alt had already established himself as an integral part of the Chargers offense. He had allowed just three pressures in his first three games after moving to right tackle. He is second on the line behind just Rashawn Slater. He also is the highest-graded run blocker on the team. Much of the team’s offensive success so far has been centered around the ground game. His performance so far has begged the question among some analysts if he belongs in the conversation for Rookie of the Year honors.

But on Wednesday it was announced that Alt was not only back in practice, but also it appears that he may fill in for Rashawn Slater at left tackle, while he mends from his own injury.

Alt was initially diagnosed with an MCL sprain, which has a broad spectrum of possible recovery timetables. Jim Harbaugh has been mum as it pertains to all injuries on his team, putting out only the bare minimum information required, but the fact that Alt was listed as questionable ahead of the Kansas City Chiefs game and that he is back to practice foretells a shorter stint on the injury report.

Harbaugh did say that the Chargers would take the opportunity to clean up areas of opportunity during the bye week, but has also emphasized the importance of rest and recovery ahead of the season.

If Alt does in fact get the start at left tackle in Week 6 against the Denver Broncos, the question will be who will hold down the right side. Jamaree Salyer played left tackle last season while Slater was out and Trey Pipkins played right tackle last year.
