Mike Tannenbaum, ESPN’s NFL front office insider, has picked the Los Angeles Chargers to go from a bottom-five team in the NFL to a top two. ESPN collected answers from 11 of its NFL experts to pick who will go to Super Bowl LIX in New Orleans, Tannenbaum was the only one to pick the Chargers as the AFC representative in 2024’s big game.
The Chargers are currently tied for the 10th greatest odds at +2500 to win the Super Bowl. They are tied with the Green Bay Packers and the Houston Texans
Not surprisingly, the Kansas City Chiefs took home the most votes. Five of the 11 picked them. Other vote-getters were the Cincinnati Bengals and Buffalo Bills with two votes each and the Texans.
Tannenbaum: Los Angeles Chargers Make Super Bowl LIX
New Los Angeles Chargers head coach, Jim Harbaugh has a track record of turning teams around and doing so at lightning speed. Harbaugh took over the 6-10 San Francisco 49ers in 2011 and turned them into a 13-3 team the next season. They went all the way to the NFC championship game that season but lost to the eventual Super Bowl champion New York Giants, 17-20.
Harbaugh got to the Super Bowl in his second season with the 49ers but lost to the Baltimore Ravens.
A turnaround of this magnitude would put the Chargers on par with the 1992 Chargers, who went from 4-12 in 1991 to 11-5, or the 2004 Chargers: 4-12 to 12-4. Neither of those teams ended up in the Super Bowl, making this reversal a historical achievement.
Tannenbaum sees the Los Angeles Chargers making the big game, but losing to the Detroit Lions. ” I see them holding off QB Justin Herbert, Jim Harbaugh, and the Chargers in a close game.”
