L.A. Chargers Positions of Need / Biggest Holes To Fill

The Los Angeles Chargers are on the cusp of something special. Over the past few season’s, they have drafted phenomenal player’s. Overall, there is no denying the talent that decorates the Chargers current roster. Furthermore, the Chargers organization has also added key members to the coaching staff. All of these delightful occurrences have aided in the ascension of the Bolts. As the Chargers prepare for the new season, free agency is still a viable option to fill positions of need.

Adding A Veteran WR

Jordy Nelson is currently a free agent wide receiver looking for a new home. His time with the Oakland Raiders wasn’t exactly a strong representation of his abilities. Ideally, his efficient route running and championship pedigree would prove beneficial to the Chargers. Generally, NFL teams typically pause when it comes to adding 34-year-old wide receivers. However, Nelson is a different breed of player.  At Nelson’s peak, before an injury, he was one of Aaron Rogers top receiver’s. In particular, his early season’s with the Green Bay Packers were special. Philip Rivers throwing to Nelson would be an instant connection destined for success.

Where’s the Beef?

Last season’s playoff loss to the New England Patriots exposed the Bolts defensive line. With no solid push or depth to help supply pressure, the Chargers defense stalled. Free agent defensive tackle Muhammad Wilkerson could be a notable player the Chargers can potentially sign. Wilkerson is a big body with a high motor. As a New York Jet, his stats were phenomenal. Plus, Wilkerson was named to the All-Pro team twice. The Chargers need a defensive player who can step right in and produce immediately. With a  Wilkerson on the roster, the Chargers defensive line won’t suffer during crunch time.

High Risk’s, High Reward’s

Nelson and Wilkerson both come with a little baggage. Ironically, they have suffered season-ending injuries, which limited their availability on the field. But, both players are still capable of producing at a high level. Overall, the Chargers have holes to fill and they shouldn’t depend on the draft. Adding a few established player’s can enhance the culture in the locker room and boost camaraderie. These players offer skill sets the Chargers can successfully incorporate into their system.
