Being a star in the NFL goes beyond just being good and that’s doubly true to be a star in LA. For that, you need to be good and embody the best of what makes Southern California unique. A kicker has never accomplished true stardom in the NFL, much less in Los Angeles. But Chargers kicker, Cameron Dicker may be on his way to being the first.
Cameron Dicker’s Rise To Stardom with the Los Angeles Chargers
He’s Good
As stated above, you have to be good to even start this conversation. So far Dicker checks that box. Last year, he hit 94 percent of field goals and 100 percent of his extra points. That made FG percentage was good for 3rd best in the league. He missed just two and both were from beyond 50 yards.
“You have one job” is often shouted at kickers. Dicker is doing his job.
He’s Got Charisma
If you’ve heard Dicker talk, you want to grab a beer with him. He embodies an ineffable quality of cool that is rare. Many in LA attempt it but it can’t be faked. The best evidence of this came from a charity golf event that Dicker played in. It was there that he introduced the world to the ‘pocket dog.’
He’s Tough (for a kicker)
No one wants a kicker to make tackles. There is the risk of injury, but it’s also embarrassing. They usually miss, hurt themselves, or just look so silly trying. In the Chargers preseason game against Seattle, made a big spot and avoided the rest of the trappings of kicker tackles.
This earned him praise from the entire team, specifically from safety Derwin James, who said Dicker “looked like a safety out there.”
He has a long way to go to become one of the faces of the Chargers and for Los Angeles, but Dicker the Kicker is made of all the right stuff.
