Chargers Biggest Under The Radar Additions This Offseason

The #Chargers upgraded their offensive line with the addition of Matt Feiler

The Los Angeles Chargers had their best offseason from start to finish by a long shot. They brought in a new regime, added some talented players, and crushed it in the 2021 NFL Draft. With minicamps and OTAs wrapping up, it is time to examine and discusses some of the Chargers’ biggest under-the-radar additions in the offseason.

Chargers Biggest Under The Radar Additions This Offseason

Corey Linsley was a dynamite signing and should fortify the Chargers’ offensive line. Rashawn Slater and Asante Samuel Jr. were borderline steals in the draft and the signing of Jared Cook should provide some wiggle room after the departure of Hunter Henry.

But, the Chargers did have a couple of additions that might have flown under the radar, both in the draft and during free agency.

Chargers Under the radar addition #1: Matt Feiler

Another offensive line addition after a mass exodus in that position group in the offseason. Feiler was a key cog with the Pittsburgh Steelers and should immediately compete for a starting job.

While the addition of Linsley stole all the headlines, the signing of Feiler flew under the radar, although the Chargers were able to get Feiler for a huge bargain.

What Feiler brings is a level of consistency to a team that has been absolutely ravaged by injuries over the past couple of seasons. Adding Feiler to a group with Linsley, Slater, and the lone returning starter in Bryan Bulaga, and the Chargers’ offensive line looks extraordinary.

The fact the Chargers got a starting offensive lineman who can step right away in and make a huge difference is a steal, especially for less than $10 million a season.

Under the Radar Addition #2: Oday Aboushi

Another offensive addition. Was Tom Telesco out of his mind this offseason? No, he finally rolled the dice and spent money where it needed to be spent in an effort to protect franchise quarterback Justin Herbert.

Aboushi – who signed a one-year deal worth around $2 million – is another under-the-radar move by the Chargers.

What he brings to the table is physicality, toughness, grit, and versatility. He is likely going to be a starter in Week One, but the Chargers’ new coaching staff has said he will have to earn that role.

He has started 42 of 65 career games, and at the very least provides the Bolts with some solid depth upfront.

Aboushi is an absolute bruiser and at $2 million is a significant steal for the Chargers and will likely make many teams across the league regret not giving him an opportunity. He could be someone that works himself into a larger and longer role in Los Angeles.

Under the Radar Addition #3: Mark Webb

The 7th round draft pick out of Georgia makes my list, and there’ a shot he makes a big impact for the Chargers in 2021 and beyond.

He had success with the Bulldogs and he has familiarity with Nasir Adderley, who is also a young player in the Chargers secondary. Derwin James leads the charge, and Webb can sit back and learn from one of the best safeties in the game in James.

Webb can do a lot of things well, although he has to improve in a few areas. However, with Brandon Staley at the helm, he will be hands-on with the defense and we should expect Webb to be one of his favorite players to work with.

The Chargers desperately needed a safety and waited until the 7th round to do so, but Webb is a lot better than his draft position makes it seem.

He has every shot to become an impact player and rotational piece in the Chargers secondary when the season rolls around, especially if Staley and James can teach and show him the ropes.
