According to Austin Mock of the New York Times, the Los Angeles Rams have less than a coin-flip chance at making the 2024 playoffs.

Mock used his NFL Projection Model to see how the NFL season will play out. The model forecasts the quality of each team and then simulates each game of the regular season and playoffs until a Super Bowl champion emerges.

That process is repeated 100,000 times to provide a realistic measure of how likely a team is to make the playoffs and win the Super Bowl. Mock notes, “We are still months away from the start of the NFL season and things are likely to change.”

After all that, Mr. Mock’s model gave the Rams a 45 percent chance of making the playoffs.

The model also projected the Ram’s chance of winning the Super Bowl at a slim 2.2 percent. That’s 16th in the league. The Atlanta Falcons and Los Angeles Chargers are given slightly better odds then that.

Reasoning for lower-than-expected Playoff chances

“The Los Angeles Rams are another team that might seem a little low,” writes Mr. Mock, “but I don’t have a problem with their placement here. On offense, I think they’ll be fine. Sean McVay and Matthew Stafford with all those assets should have no problem lighting up the scoreboard. But a new defensive coordinator paired with a young unit and no Aaron Donald seems like a lot to overcome.”
