Rookie Wide Receiver Derius Davis was the lone selection from the Los Angeles Chargers to the Associated Press 2023 first or second All-Pro team rosters. Davis was selected to the second team as the rosters punt returner, not for his skills as a receiver.

Davis was also named to the NFLPA’s inaugural All-Pro team as a punt returner earlier this week.

As a punt returner, Davis averaged 16 yards per return. That was second-best in the league behind the Denver Broncos returner, Marvin Mims. Davis is also among just seven returners to take one back for six. He ran a punt back against the New York Jets in Week 9.

Davis was picked in the 4th round by the Chargers in last year’s draft. In his final season at TCU, Davis had the 11th-highest punt return average and ran back two for touchdowns.

Rashid Shaheed of the New Orleans Saints was named the first team’s punt returner. He also returned a punt for a touchdown but only managed 13.6 yards per return. The deciding factor may have been Davis’ two muffed punts, one of which resulted in a turnover and a touchdown. Shaheed was clean all season. Only 13 players, including Davis, muffed two punts this season. Shaheed was one of three punt returners with 25 or more returns to have zero fumbled punts.
