High-Flying Kansas City Offense Dominates 49ers

KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Fans shout and cheer as a B-2 Spirit from the 509th Bomb Wing flies overhead Arrowhead Stadium, during the national anthem here Nov. 13. The 3-0 Kansas City Chiefs continued to dominate opponents during their ascent to the highest NFL peak. The Chief’s sheer offensive superiority obliterated the San Francisco 49ers’ outmatched defense. How do you get to the crest of a mountain? The Chiefs keep following and climbing behind the passing of quarterback Patrick Mahomes. This exciting young playmaker has a playground-type of fun while continuing to set touchdown records weekly.

Mahomes completed 24-of-38 passes for 314 yards and 3 TDs. Mahomes’ three-touchdown portfolio against the 49ers brought him to an NFL record 13 in three games. When the offense featuring Mahomes explodes, the impressive statistics keep rising for the Chiefs. There are several factors which make Mahomes challenging to defend for most defenses. One is his ability to decipher and check off defensive alignments, and the other is his quick release to his receivers.

A Unique Aroma Is In The Air

The diverse offensive arsenal at Mahomes disposal is, TE Travis Kelce, WR Tyreek Hill, WR Chris Conley, WR Sammy Watkins, and RB Kareem Hunt. The Chiefs receiving numbers are just staggering in only three games and here’s why:

TE Kelce is in top form with 16 receptions for 229 yards and 2 TDs.

WR Hill is a Chief flying high with 14 receptions for 310 yards and 3 TDs.

WR Watkins has 14 receptions for 176 yards and 1 TD.

WR Conley logged 5 receptions for 45 yards and 2 TDs.

RB Hunt is a dual threat with 1 reception for 1 TD.

A rare situation exists in Kansas City this year, and there is something special about this Chiefs team compared to last years squad. The difference is the aroma of Patrick Mahomes and the interchangeability of his aggressive targets.

He has elevated the entire Chiefs team around his ability to work his magic from the pocket. He’s young, energetic, athletic and takes an ad-lib offensive approach on any given snap.

Take for example his open field scramble against the 49ers that resulted in an insane touchdown toss to Conley. The Chiefs quick strike offensive display of confidence reminds us of the Miami Dolphins offense in 1984 lead by second-year QB Dan Marino. The Chiefs offense with Mahomes is more reminiscent of the St. Louis Rams “Greatest Show On Turf” led by Hall Of Fame QB Kurt Warner. Not bad to have your name mentioned in the same sentence as those two greats!

The Chiefs Best-Kept Secret Offense Weapon Is Safe

Mahomes and company will be challenged once more when they visit the AFC West rival Denver Broncos on Monday night. The annual rivalry between these two teams will take their intensities to impose their dominance to another level.

The Chiefs best-kept secret will be how well the Chiefs OL protects Mahomes against Denver. So far, Mahomes has been sacked only twice which proves his OL is stable and doing their job. The Broncos defense has logged 9 sacks to date, with All-Pro linebacker Von Miller leading with 4 sacks. Something has to give when the teams meet. It will be a long night for the Broncos secondary and defense if Mahomes has time to pick his receivers.

When the two teams take the field on Monday, the Chiefs will continue to work their magic, and they should still be undefeated leading up to their showdown with the Jacksonville Jaguars a week later in KC.
