In a surprising turn of events, former UCF cornerback Chasen Johnson has committed to SMU. Just days after announcing his commitment to the USC Trojans following an official visit, Johnson has opted to join the Mustangs. This abrupt change in his college plans highlights the mercurial and brutal reality of the transfer portal era of college football.
Chasen Johnson’s Departure From USC Trojans Leaves Vet Deficit in Secondary
SMU was among five schools he visited after entering the transfer portal.
Johnson, a true freshman, made a significant impact for the UCF Knights in 2024. He appeared in several games, starting in four of the final five. In 452 snaps, he recorded 18 total tackles and two pass deflections. The 6 foot 1, 180-pounder played outside cornerback nearly exclusively at Central Florida.
The Trojans’ defensive backfield overhaul continued with the addition of DJ Harvey from San Jose State. Harvey’s commitment came on the same day that USC learned of the departure of Johnson.
The USC Trojans face significant turnover in their secondary as key players such as Akili Arnold, Bryson Shaw, Jacobe Covington, John Humphrey, Jaylin Smith, Greedy Vance, DeCarlos Nicholson, and Prophet Bolden are set to graduate. Safety Kamari Ramsey has also considered entertaining NFL interest, potentially further depleting the team’s defensive backfield.
With those departures, the talent level suffers, but moreover, the USC Trojans lack any meaningful playing experience. They must add a veteran presence to the secondary through the portal.
