UCLA Transfer On Decision To Join USC Football, Lynn: ‘I Love His Defense’

Kamari Ramsey saw the transformation of the UCLA defense brought on by D’Anton Lynn firsthand. As a freshman he watched his team struggle to stop defenses to the tune of 31 points per game and 403 yards per game. The next season, Lynn joined the Bruins coaching staff and things instantly turned around. They finished 10th in the nation in yards allowed and 14th in points allowed. They shave over 100 yards and 12.5 points off their 2022 averages.

This year Lynn is attempting to do the same with USC football and Ramsey is along for the ride. When Lynn left UCLA, the 6-foot, 204-pound safety followed him to USC, transferring for his junior year, per On3.com reporting.

“First things first, coach Lynn leaving,” Ramsey said. “That was a big loss. After playing with him for one year, I loved his defense, NFL-style defense. I’ve always watched the Ravens play and that’s where a lot of his scheme came from. That played a major factor.”

Another defensive back followed suit. John Humphrey, a 5th-year senior, jumped the UCLA ship to play for Lynn for his final season.

Having two members of the defense that played in his system is a big leg up for Lynn, who looks to turn around the defense that allowed 35 points and 433 yards per game last season. And Ramsey is taking his role as a conduit to other USC defenders to heart.

“The main thing I’ve been trying to do is help others and get everybody else up to speed and try to be an extension of the coach on the field,” Ramsey said. “That way we get the scheme down and that way, once fall camp hits, it’s not like we’re trying to catch up or anything. We already know what we’re doing and we’re really comfortable.”

Ramsey and Humphrey are just two examples of players who are attracted to playing for USC football’s overhauled defensive coaching staff. The Trojans had a massive recruiting weekend recently that resulted in five defensive commitments, including 2025’s top-rated edge rusher, Justus Terry, flipping from Georgia and committing to USC
