The UCLA Bruins are actively pursuing quarterback reinforcements, with a planned visit from Appalachian State’s Joey Aguilar scheduled for next week. However, given recent developments, Aguilar may commit to UCLA before taking that visit. As reported by On3’s Steve Wiltfong and 247’s Matt Zenitz, Aguilar is now expected to join the Bruins.
UCLA Bruins May Have Solved Their Starting QB Problem
Aguilar, a former junior college transfer and Sun Belt Newcomer of the Year in 2023 is expected to return to college football for another season. The NCAA recently granted an additional year of eligibility to all former junior college transfers, allowing Aguilar to extend his collegiate career.
Aguilar, who passed for 6,760 yards, 56 touchdowns, and 24 interceptions as well as 140 rushing attempts for 452 yards in two seasons at Appalachian State, entered the transfer portal this week following the departure of head coach Shawn Clark. He broke the program’s single-season record for passing yards (3,757) and touchdowns (33) in 2023.
Several schools, including UCLA, Cal, Wake Forest, and Ole Miss, have expressed interest in the talented quarterback. Aguilar’s decision to return for another season provides him with an opportunity to further develop his skills and enhance his draft stock.
UCLA found themselves in a precarious position when their QB heir apparent, Justyn Martin, entered the transfer portal and 4-star QB commit, Madden Iamaleava, flipped to the Arkansas Razorbacks.
The 6 foot 3, 220-pound quarterback is a California native, having gone to high school in the Northern Californian city of Oakley.
