The Dive: Which Match Should Main Event WrestleMania 34?

There seems to be 2-3 matches every year that have the capability of being the main event of the WrestleMania. Only one match, though, gets the honor of going on last at WrestleMania every year. This year seems to have more options than usual, though, as to which match will go on last.

The obvious, and most likely, choice is Brock Lesnar vs. Roman Reigns for the Universal Championship. Both men are no stranger to the main event, as the duo shared the ring together in the main event of WrestleMania 31. The Lesnar/Reigns rematch has been the plan for a year now, and having it go on last has always been the thought of WWE executives.

But what if WWE decided to change this plan? They know that the Lesnar vs. Reigns match will get its fair share of boos. It’s also a predictable outcome, as Lesnar’s WWE contract expires the night after WrestleMania. This all but guarantees a Reigns victory, which could make a lot of fans very angry.

If WWE decides to indeed change from this plan, then it has a ton of options to replace it. The match that should main event the show is AJ Styles vs. Shinsuke Nakamura for the WWE Championship. You’re guaranteed that the crowd will go home happy, as both guys are adored by the WWE Universe. It’s a match that could go either way as well, leaving the main event as unpredictable as it’s ever been.

Another match worthy of the main event is John Cena vs. The Undertaker. This match reminds me a lot of the Manny Pacquiao vs. Floyd Mayweather boxing match we got back in 2015. Was it five years later than it should’ve been? Yes. Were you still excited to see it happen? Absolutely. Cena and Taker should’ve happened already at WrestleMania, but that doesn’t mean it’s less exciting to see these two guys lock up on the grandest stage of them all. It’s a matchup worthy of the main event of WrestleMania. Nobody would be upset to see this match go on last.

For the first time in the show’s history, a women’s match is worthy enough to main event WrestleMania. Charlotte vs. Asuka for the Smackdown Women’s Championship is the biggest women’s wrestling match in the history of WWE. The leader of the women’s revolution, Charlotte, vs. the undefeated Asuka. It’s the most anticipated women’s wrestling match of all time, and one worthy of closing the show on Sunday.

What about the in-ring return of Daniel Bryan? This match has the smallest chance of being the main event of the ones I’m listing, but the return of Bryan is a huge moment for WWE. It was in the Superdome four years ago when Bryan won the main event of WrestleMania 30. Could he win his second main event in that building this year? Maybe if he was in a high-profile singles match. Being in a tag match with Shane McMahon against Kevin Owens and Sami Zayn, though, makes those chances slim.

Finally, WWE could surprise people by having the main event be Kurt Angle and Ronda Rousey vs. Triple H and Stephanie McMahon. The in-ring debut of Rousey is a big deal, and WWE has been treating it as so. The only issue with this match going on last is the potential backlash this match would get if it was the main event. On such a stacked card, how could four part-timers get the main event nod? There’s also been a lot of talk in recent years about a women’s match finally main eventing WrestleMania. Would it look back if the two women to make that history were a former UFC star and the daughter of the owner? This tag match has been built like a main event, but the odds of it going on last seem unlikely.

WWE has a lot of good choices for the main event of WrestleMania 34. The two world title matches are worthy, and a bevy of undercard matches could also rightfully go on last. If it were up to me, I would put Styles vs. Nakamura on last. It’s the most anticipated match on the card with a guaranteed happy crowd leaving no matter who wins. It’s a win-win situation for WWE and the right thing to do if they don’t want to alienate its fan base. I guess we’ll have to wait and see what they do on Sunday.
