Former Rams Player Says Trade Away From Team Will Always Sting

Ahead of the Detroit Lions Sunday Night Football game against the Houston Texans NBC ran a portion of an interview with former Los Angeles Rams quarterback Jared Goff.

Interviewer, Jason Garret asked Goff about his trade from the Rams to the Lions, “Does the sting of the trade still stick with you? Garrett asked.”

Goff’s response, “Of course. It always will.”

The TV copy then played a montage of newspaper headlines and sports talk radio labeling Goff as not the future of the position for the Lions. But the sting also comes from being discarded by the Rams and head coach Sean McVay.

While Goff has since said he and McVay are on good terms, there was a well-documented fracture between the two. Before their two teams met in the playoffs last January Goff said, “Obviously, we had our differences there at the end.”

But like most fractured relationships there were regrets. McVay has said Goff deserved better;

“Could it have been handled better on my end? Absolutely,” he said. “And I’ll never run away from that.”

“He deserved better than the way that it all went down. I’ll acknowledge that,” McVay added. “And I think he knows that too. And I’m not afraid to admit to those things, but I think we’re all better being able to look back on those things. And I do have more appreciation for him as time goes on.”

This isn’t the first time Goff has expressed that the pain from the trade is still in his mind.

“I think it’ll never leave me, and I think that’s a good thing.”

What is the good thing? Garrett asked about that as well.

“I think I’m most motivated by what what was supposed to happen and how it was supposed to go down for me personally and I was never going to allow that and I’m proud of the way that I’ve been able to fight through that.”

The TV version finished the segment with a video insert of Dan Campbell handing Goff a game ball and saying “You’re good enough for f***ing Detroit Jared Goff.”
