Fair Or Foul: Matthew Stafford’s Latest Spot In Quarterback Ranking

Now that all but one game NFL season remains, postmortems abound. With Matthew Stafford’s at times erratic performance last season, many of those include the Los Angeles Rams quarterback situation –whether that be retirement or trade rumors.

Adding to the rumor mill, Bleacher Report recently released their first postseason quarterback rating. They placed Stafford in their middle tier of quarterbacks, called simply, ‘NFL Starters.’ This group is sandwiched between The Fantastic Five and Not Quite Superstars on top and the ‘Maybe Brigade,’ ‘Over-the-Hill Gang,’ and ‘No. Just No.’

BR defines the group as; “The quarterbacks in this tier aren’t going to single-handedly put a team on their backs and lead them to victory—at least not consistently. But while these quarterbacks may not have sky-high upside, their teams at least know that they have a capable starter at football’s most important position.”

Stafford is grouped with the following in descending order.

  • 17: Bo Nix, Denver Broncos

  • 16: Geno Smith, Seattle Seahawks

  • 15: Sam Darnold, Minnesota Vikings

  • 14: Dak Prescott, Dallas Cowboys

  • 13. Matthew Stafford, Los Angeles Rams

  • 12. Jordan Love, Green Bay Packers

  • 11. Baker Mayfield, Tampa Bay Buccaneers

Here is BR’s reasoning for Stafford’s ranking;

Who’s up for some retirement speculation? Or some trade rumors? That may keep the offseason interesting, but the much more likely outcome is that the 36-year-old will be back in Los Angeles after leading the Rams to the Divisional Round. Stafford’s numbers in 2024 weren’t jaw-dropping, but he’s a Super Bowl-winning quarterback who will likely one day wind up in Canton. If it’s not broke, there’s no reason to fix it.”
