Dodgers Need to Act Fast on Top Remaining Free Agent

Urgency is key for the Los Angeles Dodgers now that the New York Yankees have acquired top relief target Devin Williams.

Earlier this week it was reported by Fabian Ardaya of The Athletic that LA was interested in free-agent reliever Tanner Scott, but they are not alone in that. But to most including Fansideds, Robert Murray thinks the Dodgers and Scott fit perfectly together.

“There is widespread interest in Tanner Scott, and the Dodgers are among the teams that are interested in Scott. Murray said on the Baseball Insiders … Especially with the Yankees seemingly not involved — I mean, I guess it’s possible they could try to put together a super bullpen — but I think Scott is the natural pivot point here for LA. It makes a ton of sense to me, they’ve got the funds to do it. I don’t know of anything close or anything done there, but I think the fit makes a lot of sense and there is absolutely interest there between both sides.”

The interest in Scott has only grown among other teams, for the obvious reason that he is the top remaining reliever on the open market, even more so now that the Williams trade has been made, which must light a fire under LA.

MLB analyst Jim Bowden projects Scott to command a four-year, $60 million contract in free agency.

According to Ken Rosenthal, LA previously pursued at the 2024 trade deadline. Manager Dave Roberts has been seeking a reliable and high-end left-handed to add potency to the back end of his bullpen.

Scott enjoyed a stellar 2024 season, posting a 1.75 ERA with 84 strikeouts in 72 innings pitched between the Padres and Marlins. He continued his strong performance into the postseason, pitching 4.1 scoreless innings in the NLDS.
