Chargers’ Latest Bid for Playoff Reinforcements Thwarted by AFC Rival

The Los Angeles Chargers‘ pursuit of Diontae Johnson ended with disappointment as the Houston Texans claimed the wide receiver on waivers. According to ESPN’s Field Yates, “Besides the Texans, one other team attempted to claim WR Diontae Johnson off of waivers, per source: the Chargers. Houston had priority over Los Angeles, as two wideout-needy teams competing in the AFC claimed Johnson.”

This missed opportunity only highlights the Chargers’ ongoing need for receiving depth, particularly with the inconsistency of Quentin Johnston, the uncertain future of Josh Palmer, and rookie standout Ladd McConkey’s susceptibility to injury.

Johnson, despite his recent struggles, is an undeniable talent including exceptional route-running skills and the ability to create separation from defenders — a skill lacking on the roster outside of McConkey. His addition could have provided a valuable boost to the offense, offering Justin Herbert another reliable target.

Their decision to trade Keenan Allen and allow Mike Williams to depart in the offseason has significantly reshaped the team and they failed to rebuild, looking to shore up the running game, and the offensive and defensive lines.

While most think the Chargers will prioritize the acquisition of a veteran wide receiver to complement their existing talent, the brass has yet to show a commitment to elevating the position. The team must also address the development of Quentin Johnston, who, despite showing flashes of competence, has yet to fully realize his potential.

The chances of LA winning a playoff game hinge on the offense with the defense looking mortal now with many injuries in the secondary.
